What this viewer shows

Machine embroidery files are lists of needle positions, thread changes and trims. The viewer reads that list and draws every stitch in its thread color, so you see the design the way your machine will sew it, not a picture someone made of it.

Use it to check a design before you buy thread or hoop fabric: how big it really is, how many colors and thread changes it has, roughly how long it takes to sew, and the smallest hoop it fits.

Everything happens in your browser. The file is read on your device and never sent anywhere, so it works for designs you’ve bought and can’t share.

Viewers for one format: DST file viewer, PES file viewer: what each format stores, and what to check before stitching.

Questions

Which file formats can I open?

All the common home machine formats: PES and PEC (Brother, Baby Lock), JEF (Janome), DST and EXP (Tajima, Melco and most commercial machines), VP3 and HUS (Husqvarna Viking, Pfaff), XXX (Singer), SEW, U01 and over 40 more. You can also open a ZIP and pick any design inside it.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The viewer runs in your browser and reads the file on your device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or shared.

Why are the colors wrong in my DST file?

DST and EXP files only store where the machine stops to change thread, not which color to use. The viewer shows stand-in colors so you can tell the sections apart. Choose your real threads on the machine, or use the color chart that came with the design.

How accurate is the size?

It’s measured from the outermost stitches in the file, to a tenth of a millimetre, the same way embroidery software does. Your finished piece can come out slightly smaller because stitches pull the fabric in.

How is the run time worked out?

It divides the stitch count by your machine speed and adds about a minute for each thread change and a few seconds for each trim. Set the speed to match your machine for a better estimate.

The design is too big for my hoop. What can I do?

Check whether it fits turned 90°: the viewer tells you. Otherwise look for a smaller size of the same design. Shrinking a file by more than about 10–20% on the machine can make stitches too dense, so a design made at the right size is better.

How do I open a DST file without embroidery software?

Drop the DST file on this page, or choose it from your device: it opens as a DST file viewer right in your browser, with the stitch count, size, trims and hoop fit. DST stores no thread colors, so the viewer shows stand-in colors and lists every color stop in order. Nothing to install, nothing uploaded.

Can I view a PES file without Brother software?

Yes. This page works as a free PES file viewer for Brother and Baby Lock designs: open the PES file to see every stitch in its thread colors, the thread names stored in the file, the real size and whether it fits your hoop, before you copy it to the machine.
